Our interactive Canada crime map is in development. Until it launches, this page brings together everything you need to check crime in a Canadian city: our city guides, step-by-step guides to each police service’s official crime map, and national rankings. In 2025 Canada’s Crime Severity Index (CSI) was 75.0, down 5% from 2024, and the crime rate was 5,585 incidents per 100,000 people.
Data: Statistics Canada, police-reported crime statistics for 2025 (released 22 July 2026), Table 35-10-0026-01. Figures are for census metropolitan areas (whole metro regions). Updated 5 October 2026.
When will the interactive map be ready?
We are building a map of Canada that shows reported crime from official sources: Statistics Canada figures for every metro area and province, and street-level open data from police services whose licences allow it, starting with Toronto, Montréal, Ottawa and Halifax. Incident locations in police open data are offset to the nearest block or intersection to protect privacy, so the map will show patterns, not exact addresses. Sources and licences are listed on our data sources page.
In the meantime, use the city guides and official police maps below.
How do Canada’s biggest cities compare?
The six largest metro areas, ranked by Crime Severity Index for 2025:
| Metro area (CMA) | Crime Severity Index 2025 | CSI change vs 2024 | Crime rate per 100,000 | Rate change vs 2024 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Edmonton | 95.6 | −7% | 7,463 | +2% |
| Vancouver | 83.5 | +1% | 5,672 | +3% |
| Calgary | 61.7 | −3% | 5,038 | +5% |
| Montréal | 61.3 | −5% | 3,641 | −5% |
| Toronto | 55.0 | −7% | 3,950 | −5% |
| Ottawa (Ont. part) | 50.6 | −6% | 4,212 | −2% |
| Canada | 75.0 | −5% | 5,585 | −2% |
The CSI weights serious crimes more heavily than minor ones; the crime rate counts every incident equally. Figures cover the whole metro area, not just the city proper. See Crime Severity Index explained and our methodology. For all 41 metro areas, see crime rate in Canada by city.

Reading any crime map. Maps show crimes reported to police, not all crime. Locations are approximate. Busy downtown, shopping, nightlife and transit areas usually show more incidents because more people pass through them. A map describes places, not the people who live there.
