Oakville Crime Rate 2026: Is Oakville Safe? Halton Data

Yes — Oakville is in one of the lowest-crime parts of the Greater Toronto Area. Halton Regional Police, which polices Oakville, Burlington, Milton and Halton Hills, recorded a Crime Severity Index (CSI) of 30.6 in 2025, about 59% below the national CSI of 75.0 and the lowest of the large Ontario police services in our data. Halton’s CSI is roughly half of Peel’s (59.4) and the City of Toronto’s (60.0). It edged down about 2% from 2024.

Data: Statistics Canada, police-reported crime statistics for 2025 (released 22 July 2026), Crime Severity Index for police services in Ontario. Statistics Canada does not publish separate figures for Oakville: the numbers here cover the whole Halton Regional Police area, including Oakville and Burlington. Percentages and comparisons not in the release are our own arithmetic. Updated 5 October 2026.

Which crime figures cover Oakville?

Oakville is policed by Halton Regional Police, which serves the whole of Halton Region, including Burlington. Statistics Canada reports one CSI for the service, so there is no official Oakville-only figure, and the data cannot say whether Oakville or Burlington has less crime. Statistics Canada’s police-service table for Ontario gives the CSI but not a crime rate per 100,000 people, so we use the CSI throughout.

Is Oakville safe compared with the rest of the GTA?

Halton stands out in the 2025 figures. Its overall CSI of 30.61 is the lowest of the large Ontario police services Statistics Canada lists, and its violent CSI of 26.26 is about 73% below Canada’s violent CSI of 97.19. Unusually, Halton’s violent CSI is lower than its non-violent CSI (32.60) — the reverse of every other GTA service in the table below.

Police service (2025) CSI Violent CSI Non-violent CSI CSI change vs 2024
Halton Regional Police (Oakville, Burlington) 30.61 26.26 32.60 -2%
Durham Regional Police 43.18 59.20 37.14 -8%
York Regional Police 50.28 63.17 45.55 -6%
Peel Regional Police 59.41 76.90 52.92 +4%
Toronto Police Service (City of Toronto) 59.98 81.11 52.04 -13%
Hamilton Police Service 62.21 82.64 54.58 -7%
Ontario (province) 57.17 — — -6%
Canada 75.01 97.19 66.78 -5%

For a broader view, the lowest-CSI census metropolitan area in Canada in 2025 was Barrie at 46.9. That is a metro-area figure rather than a police-service one, so it is not a like-for-like comparison, but it shows how low Halton’s 30.6 is.

Is crime in Oakville going up or down?

Slightly down for two years, after a rise. Halton’s CSI was in the low 20s in 2020 and 2021, jumped to about 31 in 2022 and peaked at 32.25 in 2023. It has since eased to 31.20 in 2024 and 30.61 in 2025. That leaves it about 34% higher than in 2020 — a large percentage, but from a very low base: the increase is about 8 index points.

Year Halton Regional Police CSI Toronto Police Service CSI Canada CSI
2020 22.76 58.55 73.92
2021 23.50 56.99 74.87
2022 31.20 62.15 78.74
2023 32.25 69.49 81.27
2024 31.20 68.62 78.84
2025 30.61 59.98 75.01

The same 2022 jump appears across the GTA as activity returned after the pandemic. Halton’s has been followed by gradual declines, while Peel’s kept climbing (see Is Brampton safe?).

What kind of crime is most common in the Oakville area?

Halton-only counts by offence type are not in the data we use. Halton’s index tells us the mix leans towards non-violent crime — theft, fraud, mischief and break-ins — rather than violence. Across the wider Toronto census metropolitan area in 2025:

  • Vehicle theft fell about 27% to 238 per 100,000, but stayed above Canada’s 201 — the GTA’s most persistent property-crime problem.
  • Break-ins were 169 per 100,000, well below the national rate of 262.
  • Shoplifting ($5,000 or under) rose about 18% to 386 per 100,000.
  • Fraud was 417 per 100,000.

These are region-wide figures and are likely to be higher than Halton’s own levels, given Halton’s much lower CSI. For Oakville homeowners, protecting vehicles and guarding against scams are the most practical steps; see how to protect your car from theft.

Which parts of Oakville record more crime?

We do not have neighbourhood data and do not rank areas. As elsewhere, reported crime in Oakville and Burlington tends to concentrate around shopping centres, downtown main streets, GO stations and busy commercial roads, simply because more people and goods pass through. Halton Regional Police publishes local information that is better suited to street-level questions.

Is Oakville safe to live in and walk around at night?

By any measure in the official data, yes. Halton’s crime severity is less than half the national figure and roughly half of neighbouring Peel’s and Toronto’s. That does not mean crime is absent — car theft and fraud reach every community — so ordinary precautions still make sense: lock vehicles and keep fobs away from doors, light entrances, and use busy routes at night.

Keep the limits in view. Police data counts incidents reported to police, not people; in Statistics Canada’s 2019 victimization survey only about 29% of incidents were reported. The CSI weights serious crime more heavily, and in a low-crime area a few serious incidents can move it noticeably. And because Oakville and Burlington share one figure, the official data cannot compare them.

How do I check crime near a specific address in Oakville?

  1. Start with Halton Regional Police. The Halton Regional Police website publishes local crime information and maps for Oakville, Burlington, Milton and Halton Hills.
  2. Use our map. The Canada Crime Map and our Halton crime map guide explain how to read the official data.
  3. Compare two areas. Look at the address next to an area you know, for the same crime types and dates.
  4. Read the limits. Points are generalised, the newest incidents may be missing, and unreported crime is not shown.
