Today, canadacrimemap.com does not set tracking cookies for ordinary readers. This page explains the cookies the site uses now, what may change in future, and how you can control cookies yourself.
Effective date: 5 October 2026.
What cookies are
Cookies are small text files that a website stores in your browser. They can keep you logged in, remember settings, count visits or help show advertising. Similar technologies include local storage, pixels and tags; this policy covers them too.
Cookies we use now
The site runs on WordPress. At present, the only cookies it sets are essential WordPress cookies for logged-in site administrators, which keep authorised staff signed in to manage the site. If you are simply reading the site, these cookies are not set on your device.
| Cookie | Purpose | Who gets it | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| wordpress_logged_in_*, wordpress_sec_* | Keep administrators signed in securely | Site administrators only | Session or up to 14 days |
| wordpress_test_cookie | Checks that the browser accepts cookies on the login page | Anyone who visits the login page | Session |
| wp-settings-* | Remember administrator dashboard settings | Site administrators only | Up to 1 year |
We have no user accounts, no comments and no contact form, so readers do not receive other WordPress cookies.
Cookies we may use in future
We may later add:
- Analytics cookies, to count visits and see which pages are useful.
- Advertising cookies, set by advertising networks such as Google AdSense, Ezoic or Mediavine, to show ads, limit repetition, measure performance and, with your consent, personalise ads.
- Affiliate cookies, set by a partner’s website after you click an affiliate link, so the partner can tell that you came from our site.
Before adding any of these, we will:
- update this policy with the providers, cookie names, purposes and durations;
- show a consent banner that lets you accept or refuse non-essential cookies, with refusing as easy as accepting;
- provide a link on every page so you can change your choice at any time;
- not set non-essential cookies until you have consented, where the law requires consent.
How to control cookies
In your browser
All modern browsers let you see, block and delete cookies. Look for the privacy or cookie settings in your browser’s menu. You can block all cookies, block only third-party cookies, or delete cookies when you close the browser. Blocking all cookies may stop some websites working properly, but it will not affect your ability to read this site.
For personalised advertising
Once advertising is added, you will also be able to opt out of interest-based ads through industry tools such as the Digital Advertising Alliance of Canada’s AdChoices programme and through the ad settings of the advertising company concerned. Opting out does not remove ads; it means the ads you see are less tailored.
On mobile devices
Phones and tablets also have settings to limit ad tracking or reset your advertising identifier.
