Privacy Policy | Canada Crime Map

This privacy policy explains what personal information Canada Crime Map collects when you use canadacrimemap.com, why we collect it, and the choices and rights you have. We collect as little as we can. You can read the site without creating an account or telling us who you are.

Effective date: 5 October 2026.

1. Who is responsible for your information

Canada Crime Map (canadacrimemap.com) is operated by GG Straps Limited, a company incorporated in Hong Kong (“we”, “us”, “our”). We are responsible for personal information collected through this website.

We follow the principles of Canada’s Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), including accountability, identifying purposes, consent, limiting collection, use and retention, accuracy, safeguards, openness, individual access and the ability to challenge our compliance.

Questions or requests about privacy can be sent to our privacy contact at ggshop@safety-app.uk.

2. What this policy covers

This policy covers the canadacrimemap.com website only. Our planned mobile app, Safety App Canada, is not yet available. When it launches it will have its own privacy policy, because an app that uses location and emergency contacts handles different information from a website.

3. What we collect

Information collected automatically (server logs)

Like almost every website, our hosting server automatically records basic technical information when your browser requests a page. This can include:

  • your IP address;
  • the date and time of the request;
  • the page or file requested and the page you came from (the referrer);
  • your browser type, operating system and device type;
  • whether the request succeeded or produced an error.

We do not use these logs to identify individual readers.

Information you send us

If you email us, we receive your email address, your name if you include it, and the content of your message and any attachments. We have no user accounts, no comments section and no contact form at present.

Cookies

At present the site sets only essential WordPress cookies for logged-in site administrators. Ordinary readers are not given tracking cookies. If we add analytics or advertising in future, cookies and similar technologies may be used as described in section 6 and in our cookie policy.

What we do not collect

We do not ask for, and do not want, sensitive personal information such as details of crimes you have experienced, health information or government identification numbers. Please do not send these to us.

4. Why we use it

  • To run and secure the website: delivering pages, preventing abuse and spam, diagnosing errors and protecting against attacks (server logs).
  • To answer you: replying to emails, handling correction requests and dealing with privacy requests.
  • To understand how the site is used (future): if analytics are added, to see which pages are read and improve our content, using aggregated statistics.
  • To fund the site (future): if advertising is added, to show ads and measure them, as described below.
  • To meet legal obligations: where the law requires us to keep or disclose information.

We do not sell personal information. We do not use your information for purposes other than those above without asking you first, unless the law permits or requires it.

5. Consent

Under PIPEDA we rely on your consent, which may be express or implied depending on the information and how sensitive it is:

  • When you visit the site, the collection of basic server log information needed to deliver and secure the pages is reasonably expected, and we rely on implied consent for it.
  • When you email us, you consent to our using your message and email address to reply.
  • If we add analytics or advertising cookies that are not strictly necessary, we will ask for your consent through a cookie banner before setting them where the law requires, and you will be able to refuse or change your choice.

You can withdraw consent at any time, subject to legal or contractual restrictions and reasonable notice. Withdrawing consent may mean we cannot do something you asked for (for example, reply to an email).

6. Cookies, analytics and advertising (future)

We may in future add:

  • Analytics, to count visits and see which pages are useful.
  • Advertising through networks such as Google AdSense, Ezoic or Mediavine. These partners may use cookies and similar technologies to show ads, limit how often you see them, measure performance and, if you consent, personalise ads based on your browsing.
  • Affiliate links (for example to home or tenant insurance or home security providers). If you click one, the partner may set a cookie so it can tell that you came from our site.

Before any of these are switched on, we will update this policy and our cookie policy, name the providers, and offer a consent banner with clear choices. You will also be able to control cookies through your browser settings and, for personalised ads, through industry opt-out tools such as the Digital Advertising Alliance of Canada’s AdChoices programme.

7. Who we share information with

We share personal information only with service providers who help us run the site, and only as needed:

  • Hosting: SpeedyPage, our web hosting provider in the United Kingdom, stores the website and its server logs.
  • Email: the email service we use to receive and send messages.
  • Future analytics and advertising partners, as described in section 6, once added.

We require service providers to protect personal information and use it only to provide their services to us. We may also disclose information where the law requires it (for example, in response to a valid court order), or to protect our rights, our users or the public. If the site is ever sold or transferred, personal information may pass to the new operator, who would remain bound by this policy for information already collected.

8. Storage and transfers outside Canada

We are based in Hong Kong and our website is hosted in the United Kingdom. Our service providers may process information on servers in the United Kingdom, the European Union, Hong Kong, the United States or other countries. When information is stored or processed outside Canada, it is subject to the laws of that country and may be accessible to its courts, law enforcement and national security authorities. We use contractual and other measures to give information a comparable level of protection while it is handled by our providers.

9. How long we keep it

  • Server logs: kept for a limited period, generally no longer than 90 days, unless needed longer to investigate a security issue.
  • Emails: kept for as long as needed to deal with your message and any follow-up, and generally deleted within 24 months, unless we need to keep them longer for legal reasons.
  • Future analytics or advertising data: kept for the periods set out by the provider and in our cookie policy at that time.

When information is no longer needed, we delete or anonymise it.

10. How we protect it

We use reasonable safeguards appropriate to the sensitivity of the information, including encrypted connections (HTTPS), restricted administrator access, strong passwords and keeping our software up to date. No website or internet transmission is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security. If a breach of security safeguards creates a real risk of significant harm to you, we will notify you and the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada as required by law.

11. Your rights

Subject to limited legal exceptions, you have the right to:

  • Access the personal information we hold about you and learn how it has been used and shared;
  • Correct information that is inaccurate or incomplete;
  • Withdraw consent to our use of your information, subject to legal or contractual restrictions;
  • Ask us to delete information we no longer need;
  • Challenge our compliance with this policy and with PIPEDA.

To make a request, email ggshop@safety-app.uk. We may need to confirm your identity before acting. We aim to respond within 30 days and will not charge you for a reasonable request.

If you are not satisfied with our response, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada. Residents of provinces with their own private-sector privacy laws (such as Quebec, Alberta and British Columbia) may also contact their provincial privacy commissioner.

12. Children

This website is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child under 13 has sent us personal information, please contact us and we will delete it. Our planned app, Safety App Canada, will not be intended for anyone under 16.

13. Links to other websites

Our pages link to official sources such as Statistics Canada and police open-data portals, and may in future link to advertisers or affiliate partners. Those websites have their own privacy policies, and we are not responsible for how they handle your information.

14. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy, for example when we add analytics or advertising. We will post the new version on this page with a new effective date. If a change significantly affects how we use information we already hold, we will seek your consent where required.
