Canada Crime Map (canadacrimemap.com) explains crime in Canadian cities using official data only. We take the numbers Statistics Canada and police services already publish and turn them into short, readable guides, rankings and maps, so you can make calm, informed decisions about where you live, work, study or travel.
What this site does
Official crime statistics in Canada are detailed and reliable, but they are spread across large data tables, technical indexes and dozens of separate police portals. Most people simply want to know: how does my city compare, is crime going up or down, and where can I check a specific street?
We answer those questions with:
- City guides such as Is Toronto safe? and Is Calgary safe?, built from the latest Statistics Canada release.
- Rankings such as crime rate in Canada by city and the safest cities in Canada.
- National topic pages on car theft, break-ins, fraud, homicide and more, starting with crime rate in Canada.
- Crime map guides that show you how to use each police service’s official map, collected on our Canada crime map page. Our own interactive map is in development.
- Safety tips, from checking crime before you rent or buy to walking home at night.
Why we built it
Crime is often discussed with more heat than light. Surveys show many Canadians believe crime is rising in their community even in years when official figures fall. We think people deserve the actual numbers, explained plainly, with their limits stated up front.
Our aim is to make official data readable, not to make anyone afraid. We do not rank neighbourhoods by reputation, we do not publish rumours or social media reports, and we do not link crime to any group of people.
Where our numbers come from
Every figure on this site comes from an official source, mainly Statistics Canada’s annual police-reported crime statistics and, for maps, open data published by police services under open licences. Where we calculate something ourselves (for example, how far a city is above or below the national average), we say so. You can read the full list on our data sources page and how we handle the numbers on our methodology page.
Independence
Canada Crime Map is an independent publication. We are not affiliated with or endorsed by any police service, government body or Statistics Canada, and we do not use police logos or badges. Our editorial decisions are our own; see our editorial policy.
