Brampton is still below the Canadian average for crime severity, but the trend is the story: Peel Regional Police, which covers Brampton and Mississauga, has seen its Crime Severity Index (CSI) rise every year since 2021, from 37.38 to 59.41 in 2025 — an increase of about 59%. Peel’s 2025 CSI is about 21% below Canada’s 75.0, but it is now level with the City of Toronto (60.0) and higher than York, Durham or Halton regions.
Data: Statistics Canada, police-reported crime statistics for 2025 (released 22 July 2026), Crime Severity Index for police services in Ontario. Statistics Canada does not publish separate figures for Brampton: all figures here are for the whole Peel Regional Police area (Brampton and Mississauga). Percentages and comparisons not in the release are our own arithmetic. Updated 5 October 2026.
What do the official figures cover?
Brampton is policed by Peel Regional Police, which also polices Mississauga. Statistics Canada publishes one CSI for the whole service, so there is no official Brampton-only figure, and the official data cannot say whether Brampton or Mississauga has more crime. Statistics Canada’s police-service table also gives the CSI but not a crime rate per 100,000 people, so we use CSI throughout. For the wider region we refer to the Toronto census metropolitan area (CMA), which includes Peel.
Is crime in Brampton going up?
Across Peel, yes — and for longer than in most of Ontario. The CSI dipped slightly in 2021 and has climbed every year since. In 2020, Peel’s crime severity was about half of Canada’s; by 2025 it was about four-fifths.
| Year | Peel Regional Police CSI | Change from previous year | Canada CSI |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2020 | 38.07 | — | 73.92 |
| 2021 | 37.38 | -2% | 74.87 |
| 2022 | 47.52 | +27% | 78.74 |
| 2023 | 52.19 | +10% | 81.27 |
| 2024 | 57.01 | +9% | 78.84 |
| 2025 | 59.41 | +4% | 75.01 |
Percentage changes are our arithmetic from Statistics Canada’s index values.
Three things stand out:
- The biggest jump was 2022, when the index rose about 27% in one year. Crime rose in many places as pandemic restrictions lifted, but Peel’s increase was steeper than Canada’s (about 5%).
- The pace has slowed. Annual increases have shrunk from 27% to 10%, 9% and then 4%.
- Peel kept rising when others fell. In 2025, Canada’s CSI fell 5%, Ontario’s 6% and the Toronto Police Service’s about 13%, while Peel’s rose about 4%.
The Toronto CMA as a whole rose from 45.91 in 2021 to 59.43 in 2024 before falling to 54.99 in 2025 — so the rise was regional, but Peel’s has lasted a year longer.
Is Brampton safe compared with the rest of the GTA?
Peel is now the highest of the four regional police services around Toronto and level with the City of Toronto. It remains below the national average and far below many Western and Prairie cities.
| Area (2025) | CSI | Change since 2020 |
|---|---|---|
| Peel Regional Police (Brampton, Mississauga) | 59.41 | +56% |
| Toronto Police Service (City of Toronto) | 59.98 | +2% |
| York Regional Police | 50.28 | +31% |
| Durham Regional Police | 43.18 | +6% |
| Halton Regional Police | 30.61 | +34% |
| Ontario (province) | 57.17 | — |
| Canada | 75.01 | +1% |
“Change since 2020” is our arithmetic from Statistics Canada’s police-service CSI series (Ontario’s provincial series in our data starts at a different year, so it is left blank).
Peel’s 2025 CSI is about 18% higher than York’s and nearly double Halton’s — but about 21% lower than the national figure, and roughly half of Winnipeg’s CMA (113.4).
Is it violent crime or property crime?
Both parts of the index matter. In 2025 Peel’s violent CSI was 76.90 and its non-violent CSI 52.92. The violent figure is about 21% below Canada’s violent CSI (97.19) but higher than York (63.17), Durham (59.20) and Halton (26.26). The non-violent figure is close to the City of Toronto’s (52.04).
Peel-only counts by offence are not in the data we use. Across the Toronto CMA in 2025, vehicle theft was down about 27% to 238 per 100,000 (still above Canada’s 201), break-ins were 169 per 100,000 (well below Canada’s 262), shoplifting rose about 18%, and homicides halved to 0.91 per 100,000. For the region’s car-theft picture, see car theft in Canada.
Which parts of Brampton record more crime?
We do not have neighbourhood figures and do not rank neighbourhoods. In Brampton, as everywhere, reported crime tends to cluster where many people gather — the downtown area, large shopping centres, busy commercial roads and transit terminals. A high count in those places reflects the number of people and businesses, not the residents. Peel Regional Police’s own data is the right tool for checking a particular street.
Is Brampton safe to live in?
For most residents, yes. A CSI of 59 is below average for Canada, and comparable to living in the City of Toronto. The rising trend is a reasonable thing to weigh if you are deciding between GTA regions — Halton, Durham and York all recorded lower severity in 2025 — but it does not make Brampton a high-crime city by national standards.
Keep the limits in mind. Police figures count reported incidents, not people, and many incidents are never reported — about 29% were in Statistics Canada’s 2019 victimization survey. Changes in reporting, policing priorities or population growth can all move the numbers. And the CSI, by design, weights serious crimes more heavily, so it can move noticeably with a small number of serious cases.
Simple steps that help: protect your vehicle (steering-wheel lock, garage parking, keys away from the front door), use doorbell cameras or good lighting at home, and choose busy, lit routes at night.
How do I check crime near a specific address in Brampton?
- Use Peel Regional Police data. The Peel Regional Police website publishes local crime information and maps covering Brampton.
- Use our map. The Canada Crime Map and our Peel Region crime map guide show how to read the official data.
- Compare two areas. Look at the address next to one you know, using the same crime types and dates.
- Read the limits. Points are generalised to protect privacy, recent incidents may lag, and unreported crime is invisible.
