York Region Crime Map 2026: Markham, Vaughan & More

The official York Region crime map is York Regional Police’s Community Safety Data Portal, which maps selected occurrence types across the region’s nine municipalities, refreshed daily with locations moved to the closest intersection. Statistics Canada’s 2025 figures put the York Regional Police Crime Severity Index (CSI) at 50.28, down about 6% on 2024 and well below the Canadian figure of 75.0.

Data: Statistics Canada, police-reported crime statistics for 2025 (released 22 July 2026), Crime Severity Index for police services in Ontario. Figures are for the York Regional Police service area; Statistics Canada does not publish a separate crime rate for this area in the tables we use. Map features described below were checked on the York Regional Police website and data portal. Comparisons and percentages not in the release are our own arithmetic. Updated 5 October 2026.

What the official York Region crime map shows

York Regional Police serve nine municipalities: Aurora, East Gwillimbury, Georgina, King, Markham, Newmarket, Richmond Hill, Vaughan and Whitchurch-Stouffville. Their Crime Map and Statistics page embeds an interactive dashboard and links to the Community Safety Data Portal. From the portal’s own notes:

  • Crime types: a selected list of occurrence types. The dashboard highlights categories such as assault, residential break and enter, robbery and motor vehicle theft.
  • Time range: a year-to-date layer and a historical layer covering 2021 to 2025.
  • Refresh: data is refreshed every day at about 3 a.m.
  • Locations: each point is relocated to the closest intersection to where the incident occurred and should be treated as approximate.
  • Exclusions: unfounded reports and sensitive police information are left out. Incidents on provincial highways are handled by the Ontario Provincial Police and are not included.

York Regional Police note that some information “may be delayed or withheld to protect privacy and investigative integrity”. The portal also says the data should not be used to make safety decisions or comparisons for a specific area, and points to annual statistical reports for confirmed figures. The portal includes separate road safety layers too.

How to use the York Region crime map, step by step

  1. Open York Regional Police’s Crime Map and Statistics page and launch the dashboard or the Community Safety Data Portal.
  2. Zoom to the municipality and street you care about, for example a block in Markham or Vaughan.
  3. Filter by occurrence type. Break-ins and vehicle theft matter most for a home; robbery and assault for walking routes.
  4. Use the historical layer to look at full years, not just recent weeks.
  5. Compare with another area of York Region you know well.
  6. Read the portal’s Help & FAQ and terms before drawing conclusions.

The limits of crime maps

  • Intersection offsets. Because points are moved to the nearest intersection, busy junctions can look like hotspots.
  • Selected types only. The portal shows a selected list of occurrences, not every offence.
  • Reported crime only. Statistics Canada found that in 2019 only about 29% of victimizations were reported to police.
  • Footfall. Malls, transit stations and commercial corridors see more people and so more incidents than quiet residential streets.
  • Map counts versus CSI. The CSI weights serious crime more heavily than minor theft and is the official comparable measure.

The full release is on Statistics Canada’s website. Police-service CSI figures cover everyone the service polices, so they describe the region as a whole rather than any single town, street or neighbourhood. Smaller areas can also swing more from year to year.
