What is the Gatineau crime map?

The Gatineau crime map is the Service de police de la Ville de Gatineau’s (SPVG) “Portail sur la criminalité,” an interactive map on gatineau.ca that shows selected crimes and is updated daily. The SPVG says it gives residents information about crime in the areas where they live, work or spend their free time.

The portal covers seven offences, chosen because they affect many residents:

  1. Break and enter (introductions par effraction)
  2. Arson (incendies criminels)
  3. Mischief, including vandalism and graffiti (méfaits)
  4. Robbery (vols qualifiés)
  5. Theft from a vehicle (vols dans un véhicule)
  6. Vehicle theft (vols de véhicule)
  7. Assault (voies de fait)

The current page says the map shows these crimes since 1 January 2022. Much of the English version of the page is machine-translated from French. The page gives no open-data licence, so we link to the portal and do not reproduce figures from it.

How do I use the Gatineau crime map?

  1. Open the portal. Go to the SPVG “Portail sur la criminalité” page on gatineau.ca (French is the reference version).
  2. Choose an offence type. Start with the crime that matters most to you, such as break-ins for a home or vehicle theft for a car parked on the street.
  3. Pick a period. A longer period gives a steadier picture than a single week.
  4. Find the street, not the house. When the portal launched in 2016, the SPVG said each point is moved randomly within a nearby radius and buildings are not shown, to protect victims’ privacy.
  5. Compare two areas. Look at the same offence and period for an area you already know.
  6. Check the yearly numbers. Use the Statistics Canada figures below and our guide is Gatineau safe?

What does the Gatineau crime map not show?

The Gatineau crime map does not show all crime, exact addresses or rates per resident, so it is a guide to recent activity rather than a safety ranking. In its 2016 launch announcement, the SPVG listed these limits:

  • Not every crime. Only the seven selected offences appear, and only the most serious Criminal Code offence in each incident is shown.
  • Some incidents are missing. Incidents that cannot be geocoded are not on the map.
  • Data can change. Investigations can lead to an incident being reclassified.
  • No area comparisons. The SPVG says the tool should not be used to compare safety between areas, partly because population size and density differ.

Police data also covers reported crime only: in Statistics Canada’s 2019 victimization survey, only about 29% of incidents were reported to police. Our guide to checking crime in your neighbourhood explains how to read police maps.

How common are the crimes on the Gatineau map?

Gatineau recorded lower rates than Canada in 2025 for three of the map’s offence types with comparable Statistics Canada figures: break-ins, robbery and vehicle theft.

Offence (2025) Gatineau incidents Gatineau rate per 100,000 Quebec rate per 100,000 Canada rate per 100,000
Breaking and entering 719 197 205 262
Motor vehicle theft 373 102 153 201
Robbery 121 33 n/a 55
All violent crime (incl. assault) 5,210 1,428 n/a 1,443
All Criminal Code offences (excl. traffic) 13,497 3,700 3,673 5,585

Gatineau = Ottawa–Gatineau CMA, Quebec part. n/a = not in our verified data set. Source: Statistics Canada, Table 35-10-0177-01.

Gatineau’s vehicle-theft rate was about 49% below the national rate and its robbery rate about 40% below (our calculation). Its violent crime rate was close to the national average; nationally, about half of police-reported violent crime is common assault or uttering threats. The area had about 365,000 residents in 2025, our estimate from Statistics Canada counts and rates. For national context, see car theft in Canada and break-ins in Canada.

Is Gatineau safer than Ottawa?

Gatineau had a lower crime rate than Ottawa in 2025 (3,700 vs 4,212 per 100,000) but a higher Crime Severity Index (60.6 vs 50.6), according to Statistics Canada. The Crime Severity Index (CSI) is Statistics Canada’s measure of the volume and seriousness of police-reported crime, set to 100 for Canada in 2006, so a larger share of violent offences raises it.

Area (2025) Crime Severity Index Crime rate per 100,000 Break-ins per 100,000 Vehicle thefts per 100,000
Gatineau (Que. part) 60.6 3,700 197 102
Ottawa (Ont. part) 50.6 4,212 186 130
Montréal 61.3 3,641 213 197
Québec 55.0 3,493 205 83
Canada 75.0 5,585 262 201

Gatineau’s vehicle-theft rate was about 21% below Ottawa’s, while its break-in rate was about 6% higher (our calculation). Crime severity in Gatineau is easing slowly: the Gatineau CSI fell for a second year in 2025, to 60.55, from a 2023 peak of 61.96, according to Statistics Canada.

Year Gatineau CSI Canada CSI
2015 54.0 70.4
2021 49.9 74.9
2022 59.9 78.7
2023 62.0 81.3
2024 61.6 78.8

Gatineau had the 13th-lowest CSI of Canada’s 41 CMAs and the third-highest of Quebec’s seven (our calculation); see most dangerous cities in Quebec, safest cities in Quebec and the crime rate in Canada by city.
