The official Ottawa crime map is on the Ottawa Police Service community data portal, which offers year-to-date and year-end crime maps, ward-level trend reports and open data with locations masked to the nearest intersection. Statistics Canada’s 2025 figures give the Ottawa part of the Ottawa–Gatineau metro area a Crime Severity Index (CSI) of 50.6, down 6% and the lowest of Canada’s six largest metro areas. The crime rate was 4,212 incidents per 100,000 people, down 2%.
Data: Statistics Canada, police-reported crime statistics for 2025 (released 22 July 2026), Crime Severity Index and incident-based crime tables. Figures are for the Ontario part of the Ottawa–Gatineau census metropolitan area unless stated; “Ottawa Police” figures cover the Ottawa Police Service area. Map features described below were checked on the Ottawa Police data portal. Comparisons and percentages not in the release are our own arithmetic. Updated 5 October 2026.

Hotspots show where more crimes were reported in this period. They do not tell you how risky a particular street or home is. Police move each location to the nearest block or intersection to protect privacy.

What the official Ottawa crime map shows
The Ottawa Police Service runs a community data portal that it describes as an overview of police activity “of interest to Ottawa residents”. The parts most useful for checking an area are:
- Crime Map (Year-to-Date): preliminary results for selected criminal offences in the current year.
- Crime Map (Year End): preliminary historical results for selected criminal offences from 2018 to 2025.
- Crime Trends by City Ward: a map that links to detailed crime trend reports for each ward.
- Open data: downloadable layers for criminal offences, bike theft and homicide covering 2018 to 2025, each listed as updated annually and geomasked to the closest intersection. A separate hate crime dataset is masked to larger areas such as neighbourhood or census tract.
The portal also includes a hate crime dashboard, “safety snapshots” on policing trends and how-to videos explaining the maps and search tools. The police service labels the map figures as preliminary, so they can change as investigations progress.
How to use the Ottawa crime map, step by step
- Open the Ottawa Police data portal and choose the year-to-date map for this year or the year-end map for full past years.
- Search for an address or zoom to the area you care about.
- Filter by offence type. Break-ins and vehicle theft matter most for a home; assaults and robberies for walking routes.
- Look at a full year where possible; a few weeks of data says little.
- Open the Crime Trends by City Ward map to see whether your ward’s numbers are rising or falling.
- Compare with a ward or area you already know, and read the portal’s notes on preliminary data.
The limits of crime maps
- Masked locations. Points are moved to the closest intersection, so incidents on one block can pile up at a junction.
- Reported crime only. In 2019, only about 29% of victimizations in Canada were reported to police, according to Statistics Canada.
- Footfall effect. Busy downtown, shopping, nightlife and transit areas record more incidents because far more people are there. That does not mean each visit is riskier.
- Preliminary versus official. Police map figures are preliminary; Statistics Canada’s annual figures are the official, comparable numbers, and its CSI weights serious crime more heavily than map counts do.
Ottawa crime in 2025: the key numbers
| Measure | Ottawa (Ont. part) 2025 | Ottawa (Ont. part) 2024 | Canada 2025 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crime Severity Index | 50.6 | 54.1 | 75.0 |
| Violent CSI | 62.0 | 67.2 | 97.2 |
| Crime rate per 100,000 | 4,212 | 4,294 | 5,585 |
| Homicide rate per 100,000 | 1.59 (21 victims) | 2.10 | 1.61 |
| Motor vehicle theft per 100,000 | 130 (1,710) | 149 | 201 |
| Break and enter per 100,000 | 186 (2,451) | 209 | 262 |
| Shoplifting ($5,000 or under) per 100,000 | 954 (12,598) | 962 | 502 |
Ottawa’s car theft and break-in rates both fell by about 13% and 11% (our arithmetic) and sit well below the national rates. Shoplifting is the exception: at 954 per 100,000 it is almost double the national rate, though it was flat on 2024.
The Ottawa Police Service’s own CSI was 52.23 in 2025, down from 55.97 in 2024. Across the river, the Quebec part of the metro area (Gatineau) had a CSI of 60.6.
The full figures are in Statistics Canada’s 2025 crime release and its Crime Severity Index table. Remember that a metro area’s figures blend busy city centres with quieter suburbs, so they describe the region as a whole, not any one street.
