Halifax’s official crime map is the Halifax Regional Municipality crime mapping app, which shows robberies, assaults, break-ins and vehicle thefts from the past day, four days or week, updated daily. Statistics Canada’s 2025 figures put the Halifax metro area’s Crime Severity Index (CSI) at 68.6, down 6% on 2024 and below the Canadian figure of 75.0. The crime rate rose 2% to 6,094 incidents per 100,000 people.
Data: Statistics Canada, police-reported crime statistics for 2025 (released 22 July 2026), Crime Severity Index and incident-based crime tables. Figures are for the Halifax census metropolitan area. Map features described below were checked on the Halifax Regional Municipality website. Comparisons and percentages not in the release are our own arithmetic. Updated 5 October 2026.
What the official Halifax crime map shows
The Halifax Regional Municipality runs a crime mapping app on its police pages, alongside an open data hub. According to the municipality:
- Crime types: five offences: robberies, assaults, break and enters, thefts of vehicles and thefts from vehicles.
- Time range: you can view incidents from yesterday, the past four days or the past week.
- Updates: the app is updated daily at 12:15 a.m.
- Search: you can filter by street name or community.
- Locations: to protect privacy, crimes are plotted at the mid-point of the closest block and are not linked to a specific civic address.
The short time window makes the Halifax map best for a quick look at recent activity, not for judging an area over months or years. The open data hub also publishes other public safety datasets, such as motor vehicle collisions.
How to use the Halifax crime map, step by step
- Go to the Halifax Regional Municipality police pages and launch the crime mapping app, or start from the HRM open data hub.
- Search by street name or community.
- Choose the past week for the widest view the app allows.
- Toggle the five crime types. Break-ins and vehicle crime matter most for a home; robbery and assault for walking routes.
- Check back over several weeks rather than judging from one snapshot.
- Compare with a part of Halifax you know well, and use Statistics Canada’s annual figures for the long-term picture.
The limits of crime maps
- A one-week window. A week of data is a small sample; a quiet week or a busy one says little on its own.
- Five crime types only. Shoplifting, fraud, mischief and many other offences are not shown.
- Block mid-points. Points show the middle of the nearest block, not an address.
- Reported crime only. Statistics Canada found that only about 29% of victimizations were reported to police in 2019.
- Footfall. Downtown, shopping, nightlife and transit areas record more incidents because more people are there.
- Map counts versus CSI. The CSI weights serious crime more heavily and covers all offences.
Halifax crime in 2025: the key numbers
| Measure | Halifax CMA 2025 | Halifax CMA 2024 | Canada 2025 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crime Severity Index | 68.6 | 73.3 | 75.0 |
| Violent CSI | 89.4 | 93.3 | 97.2 |
| Crime rate per 100,000 | 6,094 | 5,952 | 5,585 |
| Homicide rate per 100,000 | 2.02 (11 victims) | 2.05 | 1.61 |
| Break and enter per 100,000 | 151 (821) | 186 | 262 |

| Shoplifting ($5,000 or under) per 100,000 | 1,440 (7,855) | 1,170 | 502 |
Halifax has low rates of the crimes many people worry about most at home: break-ins fell about 19% by rate (our arithmetic) and car theft is about half the national rate. The rise in the overall crime rate comes largely from shoplifting, which increased about 23% and is nearly three times the national rate.
Halifax’s CSI is lower than other large Atlantic metro areas such as St. John’s (79.2) and Moncton (105.6), and below Nova Scotia’s provincial CSI of 73.0.
The full figures are in Statistics Canada’s 2025 crime release and its Crime Severity Index table. Remember that a metro area’s figures blend busy city centres with quieter suburbs, so they describe the region as a whole, not any one street.
