What is an Ontario crime map?

An Ontario crime map is an online map that shows where police-reported incidents happened, usually by block or intersection, for one police service’s area. There is no single province-wide public crime map: each municipal or regional police service decides whether to publish one, what it shows and how far back it goes. This page combines the official Statistics Canada figures for every Ontario metro area with links to the police maps we have confirmed, plus our guide for each city.

A census metropolitan area (CMA) is a city and its surrounding commuter communities, as defined by Statistics Canada. The Crime Severity Index is a Statistics Canada measure that weights each crime by its seriousness (Canada 2006 = 100), while the crime rate is the number of Criminal Code incidents, excluding traffic, per 100,000 people. Our Crime Severity Index explainer covers both.

Service CSI: Statistics Canada, Table 35-10-0188-01 (police services in Ontario, 2025). A police service CSI covers the service’s own jurisdiction, so it can differ from the CMA figure above.

Halton Regional Police had the lowest CSI of the large Ontario police services listed, at 30.61 in 2025, while London Police had the highest at 73.00. Two newer tools are worth knowing:

  • Durham Regional Police launched its Community Safety Data Portal in March 2026, with interactive crime and traffic maps, open data and monthly dashboards, according to the service’s announcement.
  • Niagara Regional Police publishes a Crime Reports map hosted on CityProtect. The service says data appear with a 2–3 day delay, locations are generalized to cross streets or 100-blocks, and commercial use is prohibited.

Several services, including Peel, York, Halton, Hamilton and Niagara, do not allow commercial reuse of their map data, so we link to their maps instead of copying numbers from them.

Is crime in Ontario going up or down?

Crime severity in Ontario went down in 2025: the provincial CSI fell from 60.95 in 2024 to 57.17, about 6%, according to Statistics Canada. It is still about 12% higher than in 2015, when it was 51.05. The crime rate fell 4% to 4,296 per 100,000.

  • Car theft fell sharply. Ontario’s motor vehicle theft rate dropped from 234.4 to 186.7 per 100,000. In the Toronto CMA it fell about 27%, to 237.95 per 100,000. See car theft in Canada.
  • Break-ins are the lowest of any province. Ontario’s breaking and entering rate was 188.8 per 100,000 in 2025, the lowest among the 10 provinces. See break-ins in Canada.
  • Homicide is below average. Ontario’s 207 homicide victims equal 1.27 per 100,000, against 1.61 nationally.

How does Ontario compare with other provinces?

Ontario had the lowest Crime Severity Index of the 10 provinces in 2025, at 57.2, ahead of Quebec at 61.6, according to Statistics Canada. Its crime rate of 4,296 per 100,000 was second-lowest after Quebec’s 3,673. By comparison, British Columbia’s CSI was 92.4, Alberta’s 90.6 and Saskatchewan’s 146.6. Our crime rate by province guide has the full table, and crime rate in Canada by city ranks all 41 metro areas.

How do I check crime near an address in Ontario?

  1. Find the right police service. Use the table above; most cities are covered by a municipal or regional service, while many rural areas and small towns are policed by the Ontario Provincial Police.
  2. Open the official map. Choose the same time window and crime types for every area you compare.
  3. Check the citywide trend. Compare the area with its metro CSI and crime rate in the table above.
  4. Read the limits. Maps show reported incidents only, often with shifted locations; busy commercial streets always show more pins.
  5. Use our step-by-step guide. See how to check crime in your neighbourhood or open the Canada Crime Map.

How reliable are crime maps and statistics?

  • They count reported incidents only. In 2019 only about 29% of victimizations in Canada were reported to police.
  • Map pins are not official statistics. Police maps often use calls for service and approximate locations, and may hide sensitive incidents.
  • The CSI is not a complete safety score, as Statistics Canada notes. Small metro areas can swing sharply from one year to the next. See the official 2025 release.
