The Crime Severity Index is a Statistics Canada measure that weights each police-reported offence by its seriousness, with Canada in 2006 set at 100. The crime rate is the number of police-reported Criminal Code incidents, excluding traffic, per 100,000 residents. Our Crime Severity Index explainer covers the method.
