What is the Hamilton crime map?
The Hamilton crime map is a free online tool from the Hamilton Police Service that lets anyone search when and where certain crimes were reported in Hamilton during the past 60 days. The police describe the information as preliminary: offence types and addresses often change as investigations progress. The tool runs on the Community Crime Map platform and is linked from the Hamilton Police online crime mapping tool page.
A crime map is a map of individual incidents reported to police. It is different from the Crime Severity Index, which is Statistics Canada’s annual measure of the volume and seriousness of police-reported crime, set at 100 for Canada in 2006. The map shows where; the CSI shows how much and how serious. Our Crime Severity Index explainer covers the method.

- Theft from vehicle
Other features listed by the police:

- Tips: a link to submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers.
How do I use the Hamilton crime map, step by step?
- Open the Hamilton Police crime mapping page and follow the link to the map.
- Type an address, intersection or neighbourhood in Hamilton and zoom to a radius you care about, for example a 10-minute walk.
- Select the crime types that matter to you: break and enter for a home, motor vehicle theft and theft from vehicle for parking, robbery for walking routes.
- Set the date range to the full 60 days. A week or two of data can be misleading.
- Check the hot spot and time-of-day views to see when incidents cluster.
- Compare with an area of Hamilton you already know, using the same crime types and dates.
- Sign up for alerts if you want ongoing updates for your street.
The same approach works in other cities; see our guide to checking crime in your neighbourhood.
What are the limits of the Hamilton crime map?
The Hamilton crime map shows only five crime types over 60 days, so it cannot tell you a neighbourhood’s overall crime level or long-term trend.
- Selected crimes only. Assaults, shoplifting, fraud and mischief are not on the map.
- Approximate locations. Block-level points can make incidents look grouped on one street.
- Preliminary data. The police say the information can change during investigations.
- Reported crime only. Statistics Canada found that only about 29% of victimizations in Canada were reported to police in 2019.
- Footfall. Busy areas such as downtown, shopping centres and transit hubs record more incidents because more people pass through, not because residents face more risk.
- No commercial use. The Hamilton Police Service prohibits commercial use of the data, which is why we link to the map rather than republishing its figures.
