What is the Regina crime map?

The Regina crime map is the Community Crime Map that the Regina Police Service launched on 25 October 2022 to show the approximate locations of reported crime in the city of Regina over a selected period. It runs on Esri’s ArcGIS platform and is linked from the Regina Police Community Crime Map page, together with an FAQ, a user manual and a glossary of crime types.

A crime map is a map of individual incidents reported to police. The Crime Severity Index is different: it is Statistics Canada’s annual measure of the volume and seriousness of police-reported crime, set at 100 for Canada in 2006. The map shows where incidents were reported; the CSI shows how much crime there is and how serious it is. Our Crime Severity Index explainer covers the method.

What does the Regina Police crime map show?

The Regina Police crime map shows a subset of reported crime in Regina, not every report, according to the Regina Police Service. The main features, from the police FAQ:

  • Time window: data is kept for up to 90 days; older incidents drop off.
  • Updates: every 24 hours at about 1:00 a.m., with a deliberate 24-hour delay so that early reports can be checked.
  • Location: an automated process moves each incident from its original location to a nearby intersection to protect victims’ privacy.
  • Excluded crimes: sexual offences and homicides are left out for victim privacy, and fraud is left out because it usually has no meaningful physical location.
  • Other gaps: incidents under active investigation or considered sensitive may not appear.
  • Crime types: the full list is in the map’s Glossary section.

The police say some mobile devices may ask users to log in; the Community Crime Map page offers an alternative link for that case.

How do I use the Regina crime map, step by step?

  1. Open the Regina Police Community Crime Map page and launch the map.
  2. Search for an address or neighbourhood and zoom to the area you care about, for example a 10-minute walk around a home.
  3. Check the Glossary, then filter to the crime types that matter: break and enter for a home, vehicle theft for parking, robbery or assault for walking routes.
  4. Use the full 90-day window. A few weeks of data can give a false picture.
  5. Compare with a part of Regina you already know, using the same crime types and dates.
  6. For trends over years, use Statistics Canada’s annual figures rather than counting dots.

The same steps work in most Canadian cities; see our guide to checking crime in your neighbourhood.

What are the limits of the Regina crime map?

The Regina crime map covers only part of reported crime over 90 days, so it cannot show a neighbourhood’s full crime level or its long-term trend.

  • Intersections, not addresses. Moving incidents to intersections can make a corner look busier than the streets around it.
  • Missing categories. Sexual offences, homicides and fraud are not shown.
  • Reported crime only. Statistics Canada found that only about 29% of victimizations in Canada were reported to police in 2019.
  • Footfall. Downtown, shopping and nightlife areas record more incidents because more people pass through them, not because residents face more risk.
  • City only. The map covers the city of Regina; Statistics Canada’s figures below cover the wider Regina CMA, including nearby communities.
