Mississauga is safer than the Canadian average on the official measure: Peel Regional Police, which polices Mississauga and Brampton, recorded a Crime Severity Index (CSI) of 59.4 in 2025, about 21% below the national CSI of 75.0. It is, however, the highest of the four suburban GTA regional police services, and it was one of the few large Ontario police services whose CSI rose in 2025, by about 4%. The Peel figure is level with the City of Toronto’s (60.0).
Data: Statistics Canada, police-reported crime statistics for 2025 (released 22 July 2026), Crime Severity Index for police services in Ontario and for census metropolitan areas. Statistics Canada does not publish separate figures for Mississauga: the numbers here cover the whole Peel Regional Police area (Mississauga and Brampton together). Comparisons and percentages that are not in the release are our own arithmetic. Updated 5 October 2026.
Which crime figures cover Mississauga?
Mississauga does not have its own police force. It is policed by Peel Regional Police, which also covers Brampton, and Statistics Canada reports one set of figures for the whole service. That means there is no separate official CSI for Mississauga — any Mississauga-only number you see elsewhere is either from Peel Regional Police’s own local reporting or an estimate.
Two other limits are worth knowing:
- Statistics Canada’s police-service table for Ontario gives the Crime Severity Index (overall, violent and non-violent) but not a crime rate per 100,000 people, so we quote CSI only for Peel.
- Mississauga is part of the wider Toronto metropolitan area. We use the Toronto CMA (census metropolitan area) figures below for context on crime types, but they cover a much larger region than Peel.
Is Mississauga safe compared with Toronto and the rest of the GTA?
Peel’s 2025 CSI of 59.41 is essentially the same as the Toronto Police Service’s 59.98 (which covers the City of Toronto). It is higher than the other three regional services around Toronto — York (50.28), Durham (43.18) and Halton (30.61) — and about 4% above Ontario’s provincial CSI of 57.2.
| Police service (2025) | CSI | Violent CSI | Non-violent CSI | CSI change vs 2024 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Peel Regional Police (Mississauga, Brampton) | 59.41 | 76.90 | 52.92 | +4% |
| Toronto Police Service (City of Toronto) | 59.98 | 81.11 | 52.04 | -13% |
| York Regional Police | 50.28 | 63.17 | 45.55 | -6% |
| Durham Regional Police | 43.18 | 59.20 | 37.14 | -8% |
| Halton Regional Police | 30.61 | 26.26 | 32.60 | -2% |
| Ontario (province) | 57.17 | — | — | -6% |
| Canada | 75.01 | 97.19 | 66.78 | -5% |
Year-on-year changes are our arithmetic from Statistics Canada’s index values.
Peel’s violent CSI (76.9) is about 21% below Canada’s (97.2) but higher than York’s, Durham’s or Halton’s. Its non-violent CSI (52.9) is close to Toronto’s.
Is crime in Mississauga going up or down?
Up, over several years. Peel’s CSI has risen every year since 2021, from 37.38 to 59.41. In 2020 Peel’s CSI was about 35% lower than the City of Toronto’s; by 2025 the two were level. The 2025 increase was smaller than in earlier years (about 4%), but it came while most Ontario services were falling.
| Year | Peel Regional Police CSI | Toronto Police Service CSI | Canada CSI |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2020 | 38.07 | 58.55 | 73.92 |
| 2021 | 37.38 | 56.99 | 74.87 |
| 2022 | 47.52 | 62.15 | 78.74 |
| 2023 | 52.19 | 69.49 | 81.27 |
| 2024 | 57.01 | 68.62 | 78.84 |
| 2025 | 59.41 | 59.98 | 75.01 |

What kind of crime is most common in the Mississauga area?
Peel-specific counts by offence are not part of the data we use. The Toronto CMA figures for 2025, which cover the wider Toronto region, show the general pattern across the GTA:
- Property crime is the bulk of reported incidents: 2,566 per 100,000, down about 8%.
- Vehicle theft fell sharply: 16,711 vehicles, 238 per 100,000, down about 27% from 325 — but still above the national rate of 201 and Ontario’s 187.
- Break-ins: 169 per 100,000, down 8% and well below the national rate of 262.
- Shoplifting ($5,000 or under): 386 per 100,000, up about 18%.
- Fraud: 417 per 100,000.
- Violent crime: 987 per 100,000, below the national rate of 1,443. Robbery fell about 17%.
- Homicide: 64 victims across the metro area, 0.91 per 100,000 — about half the 2024 rate and well below Canada’s 1.61.
Overall, the Toronto CMA had a crime rate of 3,950 incidents per 100,000 in 2025, down 5% and about 29% below the national rate. Car theft remains the most practical concern for GTA households; see car theft in Canada.
Which parts of Mississauga record more crime?
We have no official neighbourhood figures and do not rank areas. As in any large city, reported crime tends to concentrate where large numbers of people pass through: major shopping centres, the city centre, busy commercial corridors, transit hubs and around the airport. High counts in those places reflect footfall and opportunity for theft rather than risk to people who live nearby. Peel Regional Police’s own published data is the place to look at specific streets.
Is Mississauga safe to live in and walk around at night?
For most residents, yes. Crime severity across Peel is about a fifth below the national average and in line with the City of Toronto. The rising trend is worth watching, but a CSI of 59 is still low by Canadian standards — compare Winnipeg (113.4) or Edmonton (95.6). Practical precautions: use a steering-wheel lock or keep your car in a garage, keep valuables out of sight, and stick to well-lit, busy routes at night.
Some honest caveats. These are reported incidents, not people, and many crimes go unreported — about 71% of incidents in Statistics Canada’s 2019 victimization survey never reached police. The CSI gives more weight to serious offences, so changes in a few serious crimes can move it. And because Mississauga and Brampton share one figure, the official data cannot tell you whether one city is safer than the other.
How do I check crime near a specific address in Mississauga?
- Start with Peel Regional Police. The Peel Regional Police website publishes local crime information and maps for Mississauga and Brampton.
- Use our map. The Canada Crime Map and our Peel Region crime map guide explain how to read the official data.
- Compare two areas. Look at the address you are considering next to an area you know well, for the same crime types and period.
- Read the limits. Map locations are usually generalised, the newest incidents may be missing, and unreported crime is not shown.
