What is the Richmond crime map?

The Richmond crime map is the City of Richmond’s online Criminal Activity Map, linked from the Criminal Activity Maps page on richmond.ca, which shows where recent property crimes occurred in Richmond, British Columbia. The City says the map is meant to raise awareness and help property owners with crime prevention.

The map is run by the City’s Community Safety Geospatial team. The Richmond RCMP is the agency of record for the data, and the property crime locations are created and maintained by RCMP Crime Prevention, according to the map’s own notes (checked 14 October 2026).

A crime map is a map of individual incidents reported to police. The Crime Severity Index is different: Statistics Canada’s annual measure of the volume and seriousness of police-reported crime, set at 100 for Canada in 2006. Our Crime Severity Index explainer covers the method.

Which crimes does the Richmond crime map show?

The Richmond crime map shows six property crime categories: residential break and enter, commercial break and enter, vehicle break-ins, stolen vehicles, bike theft and mail theft, according to the map’s filter list (checked 14 October 2026).

It does not show assaults, robberies, fraud or shoplifting. That makes it useful for a homeowner, renter or driver checking a street, but not for judging overall crime or personal safety in an area.

How do I use the Richmond crime map, step by step?

  1. Open the City of Richmond Criminal Activity Maps page and choose “Go to the Crime Map”.
  2. Pick several months, not just one. A single month in one block is too small a sample to tell you much.
  3. Filter by the crime that matters to you: residential break and enter for a home, vehicle break-ins and stolen vehicles for street parking, bike theft for a building’s bike room.
  4. Zoom to the address and compare it with a street you already know, using the same months and categories.
  5. Remember that locations are approximate, so a point on a building is not proof that something happened there.

The same method works in nearby cities; see our Vancouver crime map, Burnaby crime map and Surrey crime map guides, or the general guide to checking crime in your neighbourhood.

What are the limits of the Richmond crime map?

The Richmond crime map gives approximate locations of reported property crimes only, and the City provides the data “as is” without any guarantee that it is accurate or complete, according to the terms on the map (checked 14 October 2026).

  • Approximate locations. The map states that locations shown are approximate.
  • Property crime only. Six categories are mapped; violent crime and most other offences are not.
  • No accuracy guarantee. The City and its staff are not responsible for errors or omissions, and using the map means accepting those terms.
  • Reported crime only. Statistics Canada found that only about 29% of victimizations in Canada were reported to police in 2019.

Because the map has no open licence for reuse, we link to it rather than quote its counts.

Why is Richmond’s crime index so high?

Richmond’s 2025 Crime Severity Index of 151.82 is high because of non-violent crime: the Richmond RCMP’s non-violent CSI was 189.09, more than twice the Vancouver CMA’s 85.35, while its violent CSI was 61.78, according to Statistics Canada.

Area Type of figure Crime Severity Index (2025) Violent CSI (2025) Non-violent CSI (2025)
Richmond RCMP Police service 151.82 61.78 189.09
Vancouver CMA (Metro Vancouver) Metro area 83.51 80.67 85.35
Canada Country 75.01 97.19 66.78

Non-violent crime covers property offences such as theft, break-ins, fraud and mischief, plus other non-violent Criminal Code violations. The Statistics Canada tables do not say which offences drove Richmond’s score, so we do not speculate; the full breakdown is in our is Richmond, BC safe guide.
