The Surrey crime map is the Surrey Police Service’s online COSMOS map, which shows five property crime types in Surrey, B.C., from the last six months: residential and business break-ins, shoplifting, and thefts of and from vehicles. For the bigger picture, Statistics Canada’s 2025 figures put the Surrey Police Service’s Crime Severity Index (CSI) at 85.39, about 14% above the national 75.0 but below British Columbia’s 92.4.
Data: Statistics Canada, police-reported crime statistics for 2025 (released 22 July 2026), CSI for police services in British Columbia (Table 35-10-0063-01), Crime Severity Index by census metropolitan area (Table 35-10-0026-01) and incidents by violation (Table 35-10-0177-01). Map features were checked on the Surrey Police Service website on 8 October 2026. We link to the police map and reports but do not reproduce their figures. Percentages not in the release are our own arithmetic. Updated 8 October 2026.

What is the Surrey crime map?
The Surrey crime map is a free online map from the Surrey Police Service, which the police call the COSMOS map, showing where selected crimes were reported in Surrey during the last six months. It is opened from the “Open Crime Map” button on the Surrey Police Service crime maps and stats page, which also hosts monthly crime statistics reports (January to August 2026 at the time of checking), a 10-year crime trends report and a shots-fired report.
A crime map is a map of individual incidents reported to police. It is different from the Crime Severity Index, which is Statistics Canada’s annual measure of the volume and seriousness of police-reported crime, set at 100 for Canada in 2006. The map shows where; the CSI shows how much and how serious. Our Crime Severity Index explainer covers the method.
What does the Surrey Police crime map show?
The Surrey Police crime map shows five property crime types, according to the Surrey Police Service:
- Break and enter, business
- Break and enter, residence
- Shoplifting
- Theft from a motor vehicle
- Theft of a motor vehicle
The time window is the last six months. The police say the data comes from their records management system and is subject to change as investigations progress. The map does not include violent crime, so it is a tool for checking property risks such as parking and home security, not for judging personal safety on a walking route.
How do I use the Surrey crime map, step by step?
- Open the Surrey Police crime maps and stats page and select “Open Crime Map”.
- Zoom to the address or town centre you care about, such as a home you are considering in Newton, Fleetwood, Cloverdale, South Surrey or Whalley/City Centre.
- Pick the crime types that matter: residential break-ins for a home, thefts of and from vehicles for parking, business break-ins and shoplifting for a shop or office.
- Use the full six months. A few weeks of data can look misleadingly quiet or busy.
- Compare with a part of Surrey you already know, using the same crime types and dates.
- Read the latest monthly statistics report on the same page for city-wide context.
The same approach works in other cities; see our guide to checking crime in your neighbourhood and the Vancouver crime map guide to VPD GeoDASH.
What are the limits of the Surrey crime map?
The Surrey crime map shows only five property crime types over six months, so it cannot tell you an area’s overall crime level, its violent crime or its long-term trend.
- Property crime only. Assaults, robbery, fraud and mischief are not on the map.
- Preliminary data. The police say figures can change as investigations progress.
- Reported crime only. Statistics Canada found that only about 29% of victimizations in Canada were reported to police in 2019.
- Retail reporting. One busy store that reports shoplifting often can make a block look “high crime” without much risk to people nearby.
- Footfall. Town centres, malls and SkyTrain stations record more incidents because more people pass through, not because residents face more risk.
What is the crime rate in Surrey?
Statistics Canada does not publish a separate Surrey crime rate in the data we use; the Vancouver CMA, which includes Surrey, recorded 5,672 Criminal Code incidents per 100,000 people in 2025, about 2% above the national 5,585 (our calculation). For severity, the 2025 police-service figures are the closest Surrey-only measure.
| Area (2025) | Crime Severity Index (2025) | Violent CSI (2025) | Non-violent CSI (2025) |

| Surrey Police Service | 85.39 | 102.40 | 79.31 |
| Surrey RCMP (municipal) | 89.05 | 66.97 | 98.63 |
| Vancouver Police (City of Vancouver) | 89.28 | 98.24 | 86.45 |
| Vancouver CMA (includes Surrey) | 83.51 | 80.67 | 85.35 |
| British Columbia | 92.37 | n/a | n/a |
| Canada | 75.01 | 97.19 | 66.78 |

The two Surrey services show opposite mixes: the Surrey Police Service figure leans violent and the RCMP figure leans non-violent, which suggests each handled a different share of the caseload during the handover. Read together, they put Surrey’s overall severity in the mid-to-high 80s, close to the City of Vancouver and below the B.C. average. Our Surrey crime rate: is Surrey safe? guide explains the transition in detail.
How common are the crimes on the map in Metro Vancouver?
Shoplifting is the most common of the mapped crime types in the Vancouver CMA, which includes Surrey: Statistics Canada recorded 24,833 shoplifting incidents in 2025, a rate of 804 per 100,000, about 60% above the national 502 (our calculation). The table uses metro-wide Statistics Canada rates, not Surrey map counts.
| Crime type on the map | Vancouver CMA incidents (2025) | Vancouver CMA rate per 100,000 (2025) | Vancouver CMA rate per 100,000 (2024) | Canada rate per 100,000 (2025) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shoplifting ($5,000 or under) | 24,833 | 804.2 | 706.7 | 501.6 |
| Break and enter (business and residence) | 7,675 | 248.6 | 246.8 | 262.3 |
| Theft of a motor vehicle | 3,195 | 103.5 | 112.0 | 200.8 |
| Theft from a motor vehicle | n/a | n/a | n/a | n/a |
Source: Statistics Canada, Table 35-10-0177-01, Vancouver census metropolitan area. Theft from a motor vehicle is not published as a separate category in the figures we use.
By our calculation, metro shoplifting rose about 14% in 2025, break-ins were almost flat and about 5% below the national rate, and vehicle theft fell about 8% to roughly half the national rate. See shoplifting in Canada and car theft in Canada for the national trends.

| Year | Surrey RCMP CSI | Surrey Police Service CSI | Vancouver CMA CSI |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2020 | 96.86 | – | 88.51 |
| 2021 | 93.12 | – | 86.88 |

| 2023 | 104.10 | – | 88.94 |
| 2024 | 87.51 | – | 82.29 |
| 2025 | 89.05 | 85.39 | 83.51 |
Source: Statistics Canada, Tables 35-10-0063-01 and 35-10-0026-01. A dash means no figure in our data set. The 2025 RCMP and Surrey Police Service figures cover different shares of the same city and are not added.
Because the 2025 caseload was split between two services, a clean 2024-to-2025 change for Surrey cannot be calculated. The metro-wide CSI rose 1% in 2025 and is about 11% below its 2015 level of 94.33 (our calculation).
How does Surrey compare with other B.C. cities?
Surrey’s 2025 police-service CSI values (85.39 and 89.05) were below British Columbia’s 92.4 and far below Richmond RCMP’s 151.82, but above Burnaby RCMP (68.70) and Coquitlam RCMP (57.12), according to Statistics Canada. See Burnaby crime rate, the Burnaby crime map, Richmond crime rate, the most dangerous cities in B.C. ranking, safest cities in B.C. and all 41 metros in crime rate in Canada by city.
