Is Delta safer than Surrey and Richmond?

Delta is safer than both of its neighbours on the official measure: the Delta Police Department’s 2025 Crime Severity Index of 59.20 was about a third lower than Surrey RCMP’s 89.05 and about 61% below Richmond RCMP’s 151.82, according to Statistics Canada (our calculation). Delta lies south of the Fraser River between Richmond and Surrey and is part of the Vancouver census metropolitan area (CMA).

The Crime Severity Index is a Statistics Canada measure that weights each police-reported offence by its seriousness, with Canada in 2006 set at 100. A census metropolitan area (CMA) is a whole metro region, so the Vancouver CMA figure of 83.5 mixes busy cores with quieter suburbs such as Delta. Our Crime Severity Index explainer covers the method.

Vancouver CMA (whole metro area) 83.51
New Westminster (municipal police) 83.90
Surrey (RCMP municipal) 89.05
City of Vancouver (Vancouver Police Department) 89.28
Richmond (RCMP municipal) 151.82

Surrey’s 2025 figures are split between the RCMP (89.05) and the new Surrey Police Service (85.39) during the policing transition, so neither covers the whole city.

Is there a Delta crime map?

Yes. The Delta Police Department publishes a Crime Mapping Dashboard that shows approximate locations of selected reported incidents, with filters for date range, crime type and policing district, plus a quarterly crime statistics dashboard (checked 31 October 2026). Delta Police do not state an open licence for these dashboards, so we link to them rather than reuse their figures.

  1. Open the official dashboards. Go to the Delta Police crime dashboards page and choose the Crime Mapping Dashboard.
  2. Filter by district and period. Compare North Delta, Ladner or Tsawwassen over the same months and offence types; locations are approximate.
  3. Put it in context. Compare Delta with other places on our Canada crime map, and see our Surrey crime map and Richmond crime map guides for neighbouring areas.
  4. Ask locally. The Delta Police non-emergency line is 604-946-4411. Our guide on how to check crime in your neighbourhood covers the rest.
