Lethbridge is less safe than the average Canadian metro area by the official measures: its 2025 Crime Severity Index of 107.7 was 44% above the national 75.0 and 19% above Alberta’s 90.6, according to Statistics Canada (ratios are our calculation). That does not mean most residents experience crime; it means police recorded more, and more serious, offences per person than in most metro areas.

The Crime Severity Index (CSI) is a Statistics Canada measure that weights each police-reported offence by how serious it is, with Canada in 2006 set at 100. The crime rate is the number of Criminal Code incidents (excluding traffic) per 100,000 people. A census metropolitan area (CMA) covers the whole metro region, not only the city proper. Our Crime Severity Index explainer covers the method.
