Is Abbotsford safe?

Abbotsford records somewhat more police-reported crime than the average Canadian metro area: the Abbotsford–Mission CMA’s 2025 Crime Severity Index of 95.5 was 27% above the national 75.0 and 3% above British Columbia’s 92.4, according to Statistics Canada (ratios are our calculation). It was, however, lower than nearby Chilliwack and most other mid-sized B.C. metros. The figures describe the whole metro area on average, not the risk on a particular street.

The Crime Severity Index (CSI) is a Statistics Canada measure that weights each police-reported offence by its seriousness, with Canada in 2006 set at 100. The crime rate counts Criminal Code incidents (excluding traffic) per 100,000 people. The Abbotsford–Mission census metropolitan area (CMA) covers the City of Abbotsford and the District of Mission, so the numbers are not for Abbotsford alone. Our Crime Severity Index explainer covers the method.

Measure (2025) Abbotsford–Mission CMA British Columbia Canada
Crime Severity Index 95.5 92.4 75.0
CSI change 2024–25 −1% −2% −5%
Crime rate per 100,000 6,717 6,943 5,585
Crime rate change 2024–25 +4% 0% −2%

Abbotsford–Mission’s crime rate was slightly below the B.C. average even though its severity index was slightly above it, which points to a mix with somewhat more serious offences per incident.
