Saskatoon’s violent CSI of 130.64 is about 34% above the national violent CSI of 97.19, and its non-violent CSI of 87.00 is about 30% above the national 66.78. See our CSI explainer and why the Prairies have Canada’s highest crime severity.

City of Saskatoon vs the Saskatoon CMA

The Saskatoon census metropolitan area (CMA) is the City of Saskatoon plus nearby communities such as Martensville and Warman. The city makes up most of the metro population, so the CMA figures are a good guide to Saskatoon itself. A separate CSI for the Saskatoon Police Service is not part of the data set used for this guide. As in all cities, the central core and busy commercial areas tend to record more incidents per resident because they draw people from across the region.

Is crime in Saskatoon going up or down?

Crime severity in Saskatoon is going down: the Saskatoon CMA’s CSI fell two years in a row, to 106.3 in 2024 and 98.9 in 2025. Which parts of Saskatoon record more crime?

The Saskatoon Police Service is the official source for which parts of Saskatoon record more crime; Statistics Canada does not publish neighbourhood figures, and we do not rank neighbourhoods. In Saskatoon, as elsewhere, reported incidents concentrate in places with heavy footfall: downtown, nightlife venues, shopping centres and transit routes. These places attract many visitors, so their raw counts do not describe the risk to residents. The steps below explain how to check a specific area.

Is Saskatoon safe to live in and visit?

Saskatoon is safe to live in and visit for most people: the Saskatoon CMA’s 2025 violent crime rate of 1,439 per 100,000 was almost exactly the national 1,443. Take the kind of precautions that make sense in any city with above-average property crime. Lock vehicles and keep valuables out of sight, secure doors, windows and garages, and at night keep to busy, well-lit routes. Saskatoon’s improvement over the past two years is real: break-ins, robbery and overall property crime all fell in 2025. See our home security tips and walking home at night tips.

How reliable are these figures?

Saskatoon’s 2025 crime figures, such as the metro CSI of 98.9, are official police-recorded counts, but they miss unreported crime and are not a complete safety score.

  • Small-city volatility. Saskatoon’s figures are based on a smaller population than the big metros, so a handful of incidents, especially homicides, can move rates noticeably from year to year.
  • Reported crime only. Nationally, only about 29% of victimizations were reported to police in 2019.
  • The CSI is not a full safety score, as Statistics Canada notes. See the official 2025 release.
