What is the Windsor crime map?
The Windsor crime map is the Windsor Police Incident Dashboard, an online map built on ArcGIS that lets anyone view anonymized police-reported incidents in the City of Windsor from the last two years. It is linked from the Windsor Police crime reports page, alongside monthly crime statistics reports published as PDF files on the service’s crime statistics page. At the time of checking, monthly reports for January to August 2026 were posted.
A crime map is a map of individual incidents reported to police. It is different from the Crime Severity Index, which is Statistics Canada’s annual measure of the volume and seriousness of police-reported crime, set at 100 for Canada in 2006. The dashboard shows where; the CSI shows how much and how serious. Our Crime Severity Index explainer covers the method.
What does the Windsor Police Incident Dashboard show?
The Windsor Police Incident Dashboard shows police-reported incidents in the City of Windsor over the last two years, according to the Windsor Police Service. Features listed by the police:
- Area: the City of Windsor (the police service’s jurisdiction), not the whole metro area.
- Time window: the last two years, with a date filter.
- Filters: incident category, so you can narrow the map to the types that matter to you.
- Privacy: incident information is anonymized, and some incidents or types of incidents are not displayed for privacy or investigative reasons.
- Accuracy: the police say map visualizations should be considered approximate and can be affected by source data quality and reporting delays.
A two-year window is longer than many Canadian police maps. The Hamilton crime map, for example, covers 60 days and the London, Ontario crime map covers 90 days, so Windsor’s tool is better suited to spotting longer patterns.
How do I use the Windsor crime map, step by step?
- Open the Windsor Police crime reports page and select “Incident Dashboard”.
- Zoom to the street or area you care about, for example a 10-minute walk around a home you are considering.
- Filter by incident category: break-ins for a home, vehicle-related incidents for parking, robbery and assault for walking routes.
- Use a long date range, ideally a full year. A few weeks of data can be misleading, especially for a single block.
- Compare with a part of Windsor you already know, using the same categories and dates.
- Read the monthly crime statistics reports on the police website if you want city-wide totals.
The same approach works in other cities; see our guide to checking crime in your neighbourhood.
What are the limits of the Windsor crime map?
The Windsor crime map shows approximate, anonymized locations and leaves out some incidents, so it cannot give a complete or exact picture of crime on a single street.
- Some incidents are hidden. The police withhold some incidents or incident types for privacy or investigative reasons.
- Approximate locations. Points can make incidents look grouped on one block when they were spread out.
- City only. Communities in the wider Windsor CMA that are policed by other services are not covered.
- Reported crime only. Statistics Canada found that only about 29% of victimizations in Canada were reported to police in 2019.
- Footfall. Downtown, shopping areas and border-crossing corridors record more incidents because more people pass through, not because residents face more risk.
