Is Grande Prairie dangerous compared with other Alberta cities?

Grande Prairie had the highest Crime Severity Index of Alberta’s ten police service areas with more than 50,000 people in 2025: its value of 143.20 was above Lethbridge (123.85), Red Deer (114.36), Wood Buffalo (107.96) and the Edmonton Police Service (103.86), according to Statistics Canada (our ranking). A few smaller Alberta centres, including Wetaskiwin, Lloydminster and Cold Lake, recorded higher values.

The Crime Severity Index is a Statistics Canada measure that weights each police-reported offence by its seriousness, with Canada in 2006 set at 100. Grande Prairie is a census agglomeration rather than a census metropolitan area (CMA), so it does not appear in rankings of the 41 CMAs; the figures here are for the area policed by the Grande Prairie RCMP municipal detachment in 2025. Our Crime Severity Index explainer covers the method.

The crime rate is the number of police-reported Criminal Code incidents, excluding traffic offences, per 100,000 residents. Statistics Canada’s counts imply a population of about 71,000 for the Grande Prairie municipal police area in 2025 (our calculation: incidents divided by rate). As the main service centre for the Peace Region, Grande Prairie draws shoppers, workers and travellers from a wide area, so a per-resident rate can overstate the risk for residents.

Property crime is the most common type of crime in Grande Prairie: 5,463 of the 10,034 incidents recorded in 2025 (about 54%) were property crimes, at a rate of 7,677 per 100,000, about 2.4 times the national rate (Statistics Canada; our calculation).

  • Vehicle theft: 347 vehicles, down from 388. The rate of 488 per 100,000 is still about 2.4 times the national 201 and about 54% above Alberta’s 317. See car theft in Canada and the most stolen cars in Canada.
  • Break-ins: 248 incidents, 349 per 100,000, down 12% on the rate. That is about 15% below Alberta’s 410 but 32% above Canada’s 264. See break-ins in Canada.

Grande Prairie is a city where most residents go about daily life without incident, but its police-reported crime is well above average, so practical precautions matter. The most likely problems are property crimes, above all vehicle theft. Lock vehicles, never leave them running unattended, keep valuables out of sight, and secure garages and sheds. See our car theft prevention and home security tips guides.
