Data: Statistics Canada, police-reported crime statistics for 2025 (released 22 July 2026), Crime Severity Index for police services in Ontario (Table 35-10-0188-01). Portal, map and dataset details were checked on 15 October 2026 on the DRPS announcement page and in the portal’s public ArcGIS listings. What is the Oshawa crime map?
The Oshawa crime map is the DRPS Public Crime Map, an interactive online map published by Durham Regional Police that shows reported crime across Durham Region, including Oshawa, Whitby, Ajax, Pickering and Clarington. It sits inside the DRPS Community Safety Data Portal, which DRPS announced on 23 March 2026 in a news release. DRPS recommends a desktop computer for the full set of features.
A crime map is a map of individual incidents reported to police. It is different from the Crime Severity Index, which is Statistics Canada’s annual measure of the volume and seriousness of police-reported crime, set at 100 for Canada in 2006. The map shows where; the CSI shows how much and how serious. Our Crime Severity Index explainer covers the method.
What is in the Durham Community Safety Data Portal?
The Durham Community Safety Data Portal contains three kinds of tools: interactive crime and traffic maps, downloadable open data, and dashboards on current and historical trends, according to Durham Regional Police.
| Portal section | What it contains (checked 15 October 2026) |
|---|---|
| Public Crime Map | Reported crime across Durham Region on an interactive map; updated once a day |
| Crime open data | Separate point data sets for assault, auto theft, break and enter, robbery, theft over $5,000, firearm shooting and drug violations |
| Traffic open data | Traffic collision data set |
| Dashboards | Monthly crime and traffic statistics, hate crimes, use of force and community input survey results |
| Reports | Annual reports, strategic plans, budgets and use-of-force reports |
Each crime data set records the year, month, day, hour and day of week of the occurrence, plus the municipality, police division, neighbourhood and location type, based on the break and enter layer we inspected. DRPS says the portal is designed to protect privacy and the integrity of active investigations.
How do I use the Oshawa crime map, step by step?
- Open the Community Safety Data Portal on a desktop computer and choose the Public Crime Map.
- Zoom to the street or area you care about, for example a 10-minute walk around a home you are considering in Oshawa or Whitby.
- Pick the crime types that matter: break and enter for a home, auto theft for parking, robbery and assault for walking routes.
- Use a long period, ideally a full year. A few weeks of data can be misleading for a single block.
- Compare with a part of Durham Region you already know, using the same crime types and dates.
- For trends, open the monthly crime and traffic statistics dashboard in the same portal.
The same approach works in other cities; see our guide to checking crime in your neighbourhood.
What are the limits of the Durham crime map?
The Durham crime map shows selected reported crime types at approximate locations, so it cannot give a complete picture of crime on a single street.
- Selected crime types. The open data covers seven crime categories, not every Criminal Code offence.
- Privacy protections. DRPS says the portal protects privacy and active investigations, so some details are generalized or withheld.
- Reported crime only. Statistics Canada found that only about 29% of victimizations in Canada were reported to police in 2019.
- Footfall. Downtown Oshawa, large shopping centres, Highway 401 corridors and GO stations record more incidents because more people pass through, not because residents face more risk.

Is there a separate crime rate for Oshawa?
Statistics Canada’s police-service table gives one Crime Severity Index for all of Durham Region (43.18 in 2025), so there is no official Oshawa-only figure in our data and no official way to rank Oshawa against Whitby or Ajax. The DRPS open data does include a municipality field, so the portal is the place to look at Oshawa on its own. Practical precautions still apply: lock vehicles and keep fobs away from the front door (see how to protect your car from theft).
The DRPS map shows where incidents happened. Our Canada crime map puts Durham next to every other region using official Statistics Canada figures.
