The Crime Severity Index (CSI) is a Statistics Canada measure that weights each police-reported offence by its seriousness, with Canada in 2006 set at 100. The crime rate counts Criminal Code incidents (excluding traffic) per 100,000 people. The Drummondville census metropolitan area (CMA) is the metro region around the City of Drummondville in Centre-du-Québec. Our Crime Severity Index explainer covers the method.

Drummondville moved against the trend in 2025: its index rose while the Quebec and Canadian indexes both fell 5%.

Why is Drummondville’s crime severity high when its crime rate is low?

Drummondville had the highest ratio of crime severity to crime volume of Canada’s 41 metro areas in 2025: about 17.7 index points per 1,000 incidents per 100,000 people, against 13.4 for Canada (our calculation from Statistics Canada data). In plain terms, Drummondville records fewer incidents per person than most metro areas, but the incidents it records carry more weight on average in the index.

The CSI gives more weight to offences that lead to heavier court sentences, such as serious violent crime, and less to common offences such as minor theft. A high severity-to-volume ratio usually means a larger share of crimes against the person or other serious offences. The Sûreté du Québec’s local figures point the same way: in the MRC de Drummond, crimes against the person (2,095) slightly outnumbered property crimes (1,992) in 2024–25, about 51% of the two categories combined (our calculation). Other Quebec metro areas also have high ratios, from 15.7 in Québec City to 16.8 in Montréal.

Drummondville is policed by the Sûreté du Québec, whose Drummondville service centre serves the MRC de Drummond and is the province’s largest SQ station by staff, according to the MRC de Drummond (14 May 2026).

  2. Non-urgent matters. The Sûreté du Québec asks people to contact their local station for situations that are not urgent, according to its contact page.
  3. Online tips, not complaints. The SQ website has a form to report information about a crime, but a complaint cannot be filed online and the form is not monitored at all times. Fraud should be reported to the local station and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
  4. Local priorities. The MRC’s public safety committee keeps three priorities for 2026: homelessness and mental health, residents’ sense of safety (including foot and bicycle patrols) and road and recreational safety.
  5. Compare areas. The Canada Crime Map gathers official figures by city, and our guide on how to check crime in your neighbourhood explains the limits of the data. See also how to report a crime in Canada.
